Crime and Punishment captures the work of police, probation, prison, prosecution and parole, all coping with difficult cases and managing risk to the public and themselves, with limited resources. From sex offenders to murderers, The National Probation Service is responsible for managing and trying to rehabilitate high-risk criminals. It’s their daily job to assess the risk they pose to the community and decide whether they are safe to live among us, or if they should be sent back to prison. Get it wrong, and the consequences could be disastrous. It’s a job that’s become increasingly challenging since the government overhauled probation- an upheaval bigger than any other in the Justice System, leaving probation officers with large caseloads and fewer resources. ‘Sometimes it’s overwhelming’ they explain. This film takes us inside the probation office where the team in Southampton are currently managing around 600 high-risk offenders.
Crime and Punishment – Monday at 9.00pm on Channel 4.
