While Morecambe and Wise for many people are the face of Christmas TV, behind the scenes the man who wrote their most famous routines was Eddie Braben.
Stephen Tompkinson plays Braben in this dramatisation of the relationship between the writer and stars Eric and Ernie (Mark Bonnar and Neil Maskell), starting in 1969 and finishing with their 1977 Christmas show, which was the double act’s last show on the BBC and attracted 28 million viewers.
The relationship was a hard for Barben due to constant rewrites and demands from the stars. One famous story involved Morecambe claiming they wrote the show themselves, to which Barben replied by sending him a blank script and telling Morecambe to write it.
Eric, Ernie and Me is on BBC Four at 21.00.
