Derby day on Merseyside, under the lights with lots at stake for both teams – but for very different reasons.
Given current form and injuries, this is a game Evertonians have been dreading as their in-form neighbours from across Stanley Park arrive looking to take full advantage of the struggling Toffees.
Liverpool have scored two or more in the past 17 consecutive games and have a forward trio who dominate the top of the premier league goal-scoring chart. The Reds also have a score to settle having been denied a late winner in the corresponding fixture last year and losing Virgil Van Dyke following a reckless, unpunished challenge from Everton keeper Jordan Pickford.
A win for Rafa Benitez’s Everton would do the blues’ league position the world of good but the Spaniard, who remains a cult hero to the Red half of the city, knows defeat will ramp up the increasing pressure on his role. It remains to be seen who will sing his name louder, the home fans or the travelling Kopites.
