In light of Arsene Wenger’s announcement, at the end of last week, detailing the fact that he would be resigning as manager of Arsenal FC, it seems fitting to take a trip down memory lane for his managerial career at the north London outfit – one which spanned 22 years and largely revolutionised the club. One such memory of the Frenchman’s reign, on show on Channel 5 tonight, is his infamous feud with Sir Alex Ferguson as a football rivalry became one the most incredibly fierce periods of enmity between the two managers.
In this one-off Channel 5 documentary, we explore the hostility shared by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger which came about as the two managers were pitted against each other as adversaries in their bid to dominate the Premier League. The programme will feature interviews with ex-footballers, journalists, managers and referees from the mid-90s. Manchester United and Arsenal were constantly at war with figures from both sides losing their tempers on the touchline, marked by key events which culminated in the Battle of Old Trafford when Arsenal players got physical with Ruud van Nistelrooy after the match.
