Veteran director Paul Schrader tackles religion in his profound drama, First Reformed, which features a brilliant performance from Ethan Hawke as an alcoholic pastor whose introspection leads him into a fully-fledged crisis of faith.
Hawke stars as the film’s lead, Ernst Holler – the pastor of a 250-year-old Dutch reformed church in New York, whose modernist direction has left it struggling. Amanda Seyfried and Philip Ettinger join the cast as pregnant housewife Mary and her radical environmentalist husband, Michael, respectively while elsewhere, Cedric Kyles becomes Joel Jeffers – the pastor of an affluent megachurch neighbouring First Reformed.
The pastor of a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York – who has turned to alcoholism after the death of his son – finds himself spiralling out of control after a soul-shaking encounter with an unstable environmental activist and his pregnant wife draws him into a crisis of faith. Can Pastor Ernst Holler silence his own inner demons while attempting to defuse the couple’s radical plans to save his parish from tragedy?
First Reformed – Monday 11:30pm on Sky Premiere.
