It’s the sporting event the world has been waiting for as Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor meet in the boxing ring in Las Vegas.
Nothing in recent sporting memory has been quite like it. Irish MMA star McGregor has dominated the Octagon of the UFC, but has never fought a professional boxing match before.
Meanwhile, Mayweather is indisputably one of the finest fighters of all time, and is unbeaten in 49 fights, though now fighting for the first time in two years.
It is testament to the brash, captivating qualities of these two men that such an apparently one-sided contest can capture the public imagination in the way that it has, to the point where many observers believe it will be the most lucrative event in combat sport history. Much of this is down to the in-your-face promotion tactics, which have been pure theatre straight from the WWE playbook, with the pair seemingly spending as much time trashing each other on elaborate press tours and via social media as they do in the gym training.
You may find them entertaining and charismatic, or obnoxious and arrogant – or even both at the same time. One thing is for sure, though: whether you love them or hate them, this is a fight that simply can’t be ignored.
