In this documentary we follow the history and evolution of Irish folk music and the move from live and local performance to the recording arts. The finest of Irish folk is on full display here, with compilations ranging from The Clancy Brothers, The Chieftains, Christy Moore, The Pogues and Sharon Shannon.

The BBC archives are leafed through to find historic moments from the history of the music, and we learn about the inherited and ancestral nature of many of the songs.

We also see how certain creative artists not only performed traditional songs from their cultural back-catalogue, but also penned their own timeless classics – many of which have become staples in the folk scene.
