Preview: Game of Thrones – The Bells

Game of Thrones

The penultimate episode of this gripping final season is titled, The Bells. Or should that be For Whom the Bell Toll? For as we know from past series, being a big character does not guarantee a continued place in the script. Many paths have ended unceremoniously, so expect a few shocks tonight.

There were ominous signs at the end of last week’s episode, Daenerys went all Mad King -with trademark Targaryan twitchy eyes and pursed lips after seeing her confidante and friend Missandei beheaded on the orders of Cersei Lannister.

It seems all efforts to broker a peace – of kinds – ended with Cersei’s vindictive act of spite. So the scene is set, Jon Snow has arrived at King’s Landing with what’s left of army of the north and the fresh, battle-hardened mercenaries of the Golden Company stand opposite.

For a time it seemed Jaime Lannister might avoid his fate and live out his days in his new love nest with Brienne of Tarth, but the arrival of a crossbow-wielding, potty-mouthed, killer for hire, Bronn, with orders to murder the surviving Lannister brothers, convinces him that he cannot sit by while his sister remains on the Iron Throne.

I’m not putting any money on Cersei being around when the credits roll on the last episode, and for the other popular characters manys the slip twixt the cup and the lip. Just sayin’.

Game of Thrones – Monday 9.00pm on Sky Atlantic.
