Written by among other people the team behind ITV2 Roman sitcom Plebs, E4’s latest comedy drama goes even further afield, although it brings it back to the present day.
Gap Year begins in China, with two Brits named Dylan and Sean (Anders Hayward and Ade Oyefeso), who were friends when they were kids but later drifted apart. As they travel they begin to make some new friends: Chinese-American May (Alice Lee), who has travelled to China to reconnect with her family; party lover and May’s enforced travelling companion Ashley (Brittney Wilson); and seemingly out-of-place Greg (Tim Key), who is trying to relive the gap year he had back in the 1990s, while oblivious to the fact his own life is crumbling around him.
With the likes of Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Key on board, it certainly has the talent. Key regularly works with co-writer Tom Basden so it has good writing too. Hopefully it will be a bit as well.
Gap Year is on E4 at 21.00.
