While George III might be better known today for his bouts of insanity, there was more to this man who holds the record of the longest serving king of Britain.
This documentary looks into the Royal Archives, and reveals documents 200 years old concerning the reign of the king. One of the letters which has already made the headlines is a draft letter of abdication following the loss of the American War of Independence. There are also documents concerning his political micromanagement, as well as his enthusiasm for science and arts.
Presented by Robert Hardman, there also performances from Simon Callow and Sian Thomas as George III and his wife Queen Charlotte respectively.
George III: the Genius of the Mad King is on BBC Two at 21.00.
