The 1997 Oscar winning screenplay Good Will Hunting, directed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, remains a classic to this day with its emotional and dramatic capacity continuing to shine after twenty years. Featuring a star studded cast of Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgard and the two directors themselves, the film excelled both critically and in box-office.
A film about the psychological and emotional effects of abuse focusing around the titular genius, Good Will Hunting follows the young protagonist (Damon) from his humble begins as we see him working as a troubled MIT janitor, heavily involved in crime, and who’s attitude is pushing those who try to help him further away than anyone else. One such figure who sees his potential is Professor Lambeau (Skarsgard) who attempts to take Will under his wing after seeing him solve an advanced graduate level maths problem without any tuition or training. After Will, influenced by his “townie” friends into a hedonistic lifestyle of depravity, is arrested for starting a brawl in a local bar, he agrees to swap a term in prison with therapy session and tuition under the supervision of Lambeau. As his therapist, Sean Maguire (Williams) begins to dig into Will’s issues, it becomes clear that his attitudinal and behavioural problems are rooted far deeper in his history than they originally thought.
