While we all know how people suffered during World War One, we forgot about the other forms of suffering, such as the animals used during the war.

This documentary looks at the “Walers”, the horses bred in the Australian outback that were used in the Middle East when the Anzac forces fought against the Ottoman Empire, focusing on the battles of Romani, Beersheba and Damascus.

It tells the story from the accounts of soldiers who fought alongside the horses, and also deals with sad fate of the horses after the war had ended.

Great War Horses is on BBC Four at 21.00.
