In 1968, three Hull fishing trawlers – the St. Romanus, the Kingston Peridot and the Ross Cleveland – sunk in the same week, killing 58 deep-sea fishermen.

At a time when this was the most dangerous job in the world, the womenfolk of Hull decided that it was time to improve the conditions. This documentary, narrated by local comedian Lucy Beaumont, follows the campaign to make fishing safer, lead by cod-skinner Lillian Bilocca.

Hull’s Headscarf Heroes is on BBC Four at 21.00.
