The BBC’s latest “landmark” series sees celebrities nominating their icons of the 20th century, with the public voting on who is the greatest of all.

We begin with Sir Trevor McDonald, who has selected four different world leaders: wartime prime minister Winston Churchill, his American counterpart President Franklin D. Roosevelt, South African president and political prisoner Nelson Mandela, and (perhaps controversially) Britain’s first woman PM Margaret Thatcher.

The series continues with another episode tomorrow, with Dermot O’Leary championing four great explorers.

Icons is on BBC Two at 21.00.
