Tonight is Gareth Southgate’s first match since he got the job of England manager.
The good news for him is that is a friendly, so there is nothing really up for stake except pride. The bad news is that the match is against Germany, and before we get onto all the historical baggage between the two nations, there is the small issue that the Germans are the current holders of the World Cup.
With some World Cup qualifiers coming up in a few days’ time, the match does at least give Southgate some preparation time for more important matches. At least he can’t be as bad as Roy Hodgson… we hope…
Germany v England is on ITV at 19.15 (kick-off 19.45)
