Earlier this year BBC Four broadcast one of its odder, yet successful programmes. That being ex-Top Gear and now Grand Tour star James May taking the raw components of a classic everyday device and putting it back together again.
The new series begins with a Christmas special, and sees May return to his love of toys as seen in his earlier series Toy Stories, as he rebuilds an old present he got back in 1972 – a Triang Hornby Flying Scotsman train set.
This piece of “slow television” is actually a surprisingly entertaining watch, mainly because it is nice to see a man in his element. What other TV presenter would get a sense of enjoyment from using a re-magnetiser?
James May: The Christmas Reassembler is on BBC Four at 21.00.
