Armchair fans rejoice, this could be a season-defining fixture under the lights as Liverpool take on Chelsea at Anfield.
Who would have thought it? A month ago Liverpool were flying high in second place in the premier league and were considered genuine title contenders: free scoring, fluent and playing with an exuberance not seen since the ‘Gerrard slip’ season of 20013/14. However, after a calamitous January, which has seen them limp out of both domestic cup competitions and a pasting taken at the hands of relegation-threatened Swansea City, Liverpool have allowed their season to turn to dust.
What better time, then, to welcome 2017 champions-elect, Chelsea? The Blues are the form team in the top flight and after early season blips have rediscovered the intensity that returned the title to Stamford Bridge in 2015. Antonio Conte has done the basics and created a team that are, first and foremost, difficult to beat and who can spring from transition to all-out attack at blistering speed.
Anything less than a win for the Merseysiders effectively rules them out of the final shake up. While if other results go in their favour, a win for Chelsea could take them 11 points clear of the chasing pack and the fat lady can begin her vocal warm up.
Liverpool v Chelsea – Tuesday from 7.00pm on BT Sport 1
