The adult world can be a bleak place from time-to-time and that innocent childhood magic slips away all too easily. It’s a good thing, then, that the world’s most-beloved magical nanny is on hand to sprinkle a little wonderment back into the mundane in Rob Marshall’s 2018 fantastical reimagining of the classic 60s tale.
Emily Blunt makes the role her own as Mary Poppins while the film’s traditional sense of magic and cockney charm is admirably embodied by Lin Manuel Miranda’s lamplighter, Jack, and Meryl Streep’s zany fixer, Topsy. Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer represent the adult world as they play fully-grown reincarnations of Michael and Jane Banks from the original film while Pixie Davis, Nathaniel Saleh and Joel Dawson become a new generation of Banks children for Mary to look after. Rounding off the main cast is Colin Firth, who joins the film as its baddie – the corrupt banker Mr. Wilkin – while veterans Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury and Julie Walters all feature elsewhere.
Having lost his wife and struggling financially, Michael Banks has moved himself and his children into his childhood home alongside his sister, Jane. When the corrupt owner of a local bank threatens to repossess their belongings and home, things seem bleak for the Banks family – that is, until a fantastical part of the Banks siblings’ past drops out of the sky. With the help of a new generation of Banks children and the friendly cockney lamplighter, Jack, will Mary Poppins be able to work her magic once again and make believers of Michael and Jane once again?
