Masterchef: The Professionals as a title really doesn’t do this show any favours.
Maybe we have become spoilt by the quality of candidates from the general public on plain old dowdy Masterchef (The Amateurs) and the exquisite craft of those competing on the Great British Menu because some of the ‘chefs’ dishing up here are so substandard you’d be forgiven they’d been included for comic effect.
Tonight, though, hosts Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace bring together another six hopefuls to compete for a place in the quarter-finals.
As usual, we begin with the excruciating watch-through-fingers skills test, which quickly identifies those whose background is frying up in the local cafe and those who have seen and used a filleting knife before.
With a 15-minute time limit, the first three up are asked to create a simple sea bass ceviche. How hard can that be? While the others face a test set by Michelin-starred Wareing, who examines their butchery skills and subtlety of flavour when they are asked to cook a pork chop and grain mustard sauce.
As usual, the results are … interesting
