The occasional documentary series about classical music returns, with guest presenter Joan Bakewell joining regular Suzy Klein.
This episode focuses on music between 1953-71. We look at the music that was used in Elizabeth II’s coronation and how the BBC brought the Last Night of the Proms to TV. Meanwhile, classical music became a feature of films at the time such as Brief Encounter and The Bridge on the River Kwai.
We also explore Britten’s War Requiem, the connections between classical and the new popular music that began to emerge, and how some classical music was used in advertising.
Our Classical Century is on BBC Four at 21.00.
