The untold story behind Judy Garland’s classic 1939 fantasy film – based on Lyman Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s book – is imagined by Sam Raimi as he revisits Oz from the great wizard’s perspective a number of years before Dorothy’s adventure in the original. The prequel stars James Franco as the shady sideshow magician, Oscar Diggs, supported by the talents of Mila Kunis, Zach Braff and Michelle Williams.
After being sucked into the eye of a tornado devastating Kansas, sideshow magician Oscar Diggs (Franco) is transported to the mystical Land of Oz, meeting the beautiful but naive witch Theodora (Kunis) shortly after his arrival. As the two journey through the wilderness of Oz the come upon a flying monkey (voiced by Zach Braff) who eventually leads them to the Emerald City, while Theordora begins to fall in love with the enigmatic “wizard” from Kansas – something which Franco’s character does not reciprocate. As Diggs travel through the mystical realm he begins to uncover a web of lies and must fight with the help of the iconic munchkins and the good witches of Oz to restore order and purity to the land.
