Penny Blacks and Twopenny Blues: How Britain Got Stuck on Stamps

BBC Four’s latest Timeshift documentary looks at the world of philately and stamp collecting.

Presented and written by Andrew Martin, himself a stamp collector in his youth, he examines the history of stamp collecting, including looking at some of the most famous philatelists in history like King George V, as well looking at some of the most famous stamps published like the Penny Black.

There also some of the lesser known aspects of the history: for example, late politician Tony Benn’s attempt to remove the Queen’s head from British stamps, and the fact that before stamp were invented it was the person receiving the letter who had to pay for it.

Penny Blacks and Twopenny Blues: How Britain Got Stuck on Stamps is on BBC Four at 21.00.
