Judi Dench and Steve Coogan star in this BAFTA award winning screenplay adapted by director Stephen Frears.
The film (released in 2013) follows the true story of a young Irish teenager, Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), who – after getting pregnant out of wedlock – is forced to give her son up for adoption and live out her days until adulthood in a convent. Beset by grief and regret, she spends the next 50 years trying to reconnect with her lost child but after seeing her attempts come to no avail, she enlists the help of investigative journalist, Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan).
The film, based on real events, emulates the emotional hardship of Philomena’s struggle excellently and is worth every minute of its hour and a half screen time.
