Medical twins Chris and Xand van Tulleken looks at the different ways children are brought up across the globe.

This opening episode looks at danger, or rather the lack of danger children are exposed to. In the UK, around 75% of children spend less time outdoors than people in prison. Almost all British parents say they wouldn’t leave their seven-year-old on public transport alone.

In comparison, this programme follows a seven-year-old from Tokyo who commutes across the city to school. The van Tullekens thus conduct their own experiment to see how some British children of a similar age can get across London via bus to the London Eyes without the help of their parents.

Planet Child is on ITV at 21.00.
