It’s not often that a period drama or so-called “small film” encapsulates such intrigue, mystery and such an atmosphere of magic using such a relatively low budget but thats exactly what legendary director Christopher Nolan achieves here. Award-winning actors Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale star in this mystery drama set in 19th century London. Nolan works his magic – no pun intended – on the silver screen once again with this gripping ode to illusionary “magic.” The film boasts a star studded supporting cast including David Bowie, Michael Caine, Andy Serkis and Scarlett Johansson.
The film begins with two friends and amateur magicians, Robert Angiers (Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Bale), joining a magicians set in Victorian London, along with Angiers’ wife Julia. As the assistant to the magician, Julia’s trick includes dropping into a water tank, bound, and escaping before drowning. However the inexperienced Borden ties one of the knots too tightly and Angier’s wife dies in the tank – something which Angier attributes directly to his once good friend. With a burning grudge towards Borden – who now runs his own magic company – Angiers sets out on his own to sabotage his new nemesis while surpassing his image by performing illusions himself. As the two descend into a war of sabotage, espionage and deceit, the two begin to discover that even death cannot stop a great illusionist.
