David Dimbleby presents a special edition of Question Time from Birmingham. They say time is the great healer – well, not if the UK is still as divided as it was on referendum day over the future direction and relationship – or absence of – with the European Union.
The Government is poised to invoke Article 50 this week committing the UK to an irreversible exit from the EU without a defined strategy or plan beyond the oft-used mantra of ‘Taking back control’. Can tonight’s panel offer any reassurance that Brexit is anything other than a cataclysmic exercise in national self-harming?
The performance of David Davis, Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, while giving evidence to MPs at a Commons select committee on 15 March, illustrated the worst fears of ‘remoaners’ as he acknowledged the government has done no economic assessment of the impact of leaving the EU without a deal. Let’s hope he has a more coherent vision here.
Also taking part tonight are Sir Keir Starmer, Nick Clegg, Alex Salmond, Suzanne Evans and Melanie Phillips.
