David Starkey is certainly one of the best known and somewhat controversial historians around – although his controversies tend to be when he comments on modern day events, so it’s best he sticks to the past.

Starkey looks into the history of the Protestant Reformation, which began 500 years ago when Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses to the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany, which lead to the creation of new branches of Christianity.

These branches would lead to Britain splitting from the Catholic Church in Rome, and starting of religious wars and fundamentalist beliefs that have disturbing similarities with events today.

Reformation: Europe’s Holy War is on BBC Two at 21.00.
