Our homes are the largest investment most of us will ever make. But as our lives evolve, what we need from our bricks and mortar can change dramatically. Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer look back at even more of their resplendent renovations and fascinating house-hunts, which have helped to settle the do-it-up dilemmas of squabbling couples across the UK.
This time, Kirstie and Phil look back at a tale of two unfinished projects impacting both property values and family life. One family started their home renovation two decades ago and never completed it, whilst the other were stopped in their tracks when tragedy struck. In Poole, married couple Sue and Roy were twenty years into their home renovation with no end in sight. Builder Roy started with grand plans of converting their chalet bungalow into the home of Sue’s dreams, and whilst much of the major work was complete, the lack of doors, unfinished bathrooms or useable main bedroom was driving Sue mad, not to mention the disused swimming pool nicknamed ‘the swamp’. Sue believed enough was enough and it was time to move on, whilst Roy was determined he could and would finish the job… eventually.
In Great Bookham, mum-and-daughter duo Abi and Maddy were stuck in limbo with an unfinished kitchen-diner started by Abi’s late partner Ade, who tragically passed away a few years prior. Whilst Abi couldn’t bear to leave her treasured memories and home of three decades behind, daughter Maddie believed a fresh start was needed. Whilst Kirstie got to work helping the pair finish Ade’s last project, Phil showed them that memories can move with you to pastures new, on an emotional rollercoaster and one of their toughest challenges to date.
