Simon Reeve has made some big journeys but this has to be the biggest yet. It must be – he’s in the biggest country in the world.
Reeve is travelling across Russia, which this year marks the 100th anniversary since the country’s revolution. He starts his journey in the east of the country in Kamchatka as he travels 4,000 miles west to Moscow, albeit under the watchful eyes of the local authorities.
In the opening episode he visits among other places the Batagaika crater, the “gateway to the underworld”, which due to climate change is releasing methane, an even worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
Russia with Simon Reeve is on BBC Two at 21.00.
