Preview – Sailors, Ships & Stevedores: The Story of British Docks

docklands

Part of BBC Four’s Timeshift series, this one-off documentary looks at the history of the country’s docklands, and how they became places that showed our place as the commercial hub at the heart of an Empire to the home of cultural consumption.

Among the areas investigated include Cardiff’s Tiger Bay which became a multicultural hub, and Liverpool’s docks that helped influence music, including the story of how “You’ll Never Walk Alone” became the anthem for Liverpool FC. There is also obviously the radical change of the docklands of London, and the conversion of the area from one of trade to one of leisure.

Sailors, Ships & Stevedores: The Story of British Docks is on BBC Four at 21.00 tonight.
