Part of the BBC’s Contains Strong Language poetry season, this show looks at the anthology The Mersey Sound.

Published by Penguin 50 years ago, this book helped to spread the written words of Brian Patten, Adrian Henri and perhaps most famously Roger McGough to a wider audience. The show tries to claim that The Mersey Sound was as big a cultural export from Liverpool as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely heart Club Band, which was also released in the same year.

McGough and Patten both feature in this programme, as well as other writers such as John Cooper Clarke.

Sex, Chips and Poetry: 50 Years of the Mersey Sound is on BBC Four at 21.00.
