No sooner have we kicked off the FA Cup proper, than we get to the business end of the EFL Cup with the semi-final first-leg tie between Southampton and Liverpool.
St Mary’s is the venue for tonight’s game and Claude Puel’s Saints will be keen to build a solid advantage to take into the return match at Anfield next week.
Jurgen Klopp spared many of his senior squad during Liverpool’s scoreless FA Cup draw with Plymouth Argyle three days ago and with a crucial fixture against Manchester United next up, it remains to be seen where the Liverpool boss sees his priorities. Does he keep faith with youth and risk taking a beating or expose his senior players to fatigue, injury or suspension. With so many games for the Merseysiders in January, these are choices Klopp could certainly do without.
