There’s a bit of an issue with this year’s SPOTY: we don’t know who’s been nominated.
This year, the BBC has decided to not reveal the nominations until the ceremony has started, thus we have no idea who is up for consideration. We can make some guesses as to who might be up: Harry Kane who won the Golden Boot at this year’s World Cup; Geraint Thomas for winning the Tour de France; Lizzy Yarnold for retaining her gold medal in the skeleton at the Winter Olympics perhaps? Following his win in the UK Championship last week, there has been support for a nomination for Ronnie O’Sullivan as he has now won more snooker majors than anyone else.
We do know of some things that are happening. There is a new award for the Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year, and there will be some music – in particular the return of Baddiel and Skinner singing Three Lions (will they update it to “52 years of hurt”?)
Sports Personality of the Year is on BBC One at 19.00.
