Confusingly, this show is not set in Sudan, but in Kenya and the former Czechoslovakia. The “Sudan” in the title is the name of the world’s last male northern white rhinoceros.
There are only three northern white rhinos left in the world, the other two being females. Sudan is now living in comfort in a Kenyan conservancy, but it looks like that sadly the species will soon die out altogether and become extinct.
This programme follows the life of Sudan, from being trapped in 1970s to being taken to a zoo where he lived for 30 years, while other northern white rhinos were slowly killed over time by poachers.
Sudan: the Last of the Rhinos – Natural World, is on BBC Two at 21.00.
