In this three-part documentary Dr. Sam Willis looks at how the weapons we British have used have shaped our history.
Dr. Willis looks back at the Battle of Ethandun in 848 AD, where Alfred the Great developed a shield wall to stop attacks from the Vikings; the weapons that were brought over by the Normans that helped William the Conqueror winning the Battle of Hastings; and how iconic weapons such as the longbow were developed.
While it makes for interesting viewing, there is also that little bit in the back of your mind that might make watching this show uncomfortable. After all, this is a grand total of three hours on the many ways the British killed people.
Sword, Musket and Machine Gun: Britain’s Armed History is on BBC Four at 21.00.
