Preview: The Ashes – 1st Test, day 2

The Ashes -1st Test day 2

What a crackerjack start to an Ashes series yesterday proved to be. First England had the ascendancy, then Australia through a first-rate tonne from Steve Smith and stubborn support at the tail from Peter Siddle rescued them from 122-8 to close on 284 all out.

England will emerge at Edgbaston today unscathed from last night’s tricky final few overs, but with an overwhelming sense of

Take nothing for granted with this England line up, at Test level it can blow hot and cold – as capable as they are of brilliant wins, they continue to confound with 10-wicket defeats to the Windies and batting collapses sush as that against Ireland last week.

This is elite level cricket – take your eye off the ball and your opponent will race from travails to a defendable total. I don’t think this will be an Ashes dominated by batsmen. Runs that are put on the board will be hard earned as demonstrated by Smith’s 144 but the movement for the swingers and the nipping about for spinners has shown there is much in the pitch for bowlers to exploit.

The Ashes – 1st Test, day 2 – Friday from 10.00am on  Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports The Ashes.
