Divorce as entertainment? Way to go Channel 4. On the face of it this should be a gruelling hour through the emotional wringer. So it is a surprise that this documentary, filmed over the 18-month period charting the break up of Steve and Terri-Anne is both compelling and intimate.
There are no answers, no cure for upset and pain, only an outcome. Along the way the cameras carefully pick their way through a minefield of baggage, which includes infidelity and access to children while the two key protagonists are unable to talk to each other.
They’re struggling to agree about letting Steve see their two young kids. Now they’ve decided to make a final attempt to resolve their issues, with the help of a family mediator – the impartial Victoria Hewitt. But when Steve brings his new wife Clare into the mediation room, and Terri-Anne brings in her mum, we discover what really happened to cause such a difficult break up.
This raw and explosive documentary tells the story of why some relationships fail, with heart-breaking honesty; and shows how this ex-couple fight to resolve their differences for the sake of their kids.
The Break Up – Tuesday 11.05pm on Channel4.
