Perhaps it is not the most original idea, but this documentary series looks at how comedy has reflected our society in the past 40 years.
Airing across the Easter weekend, with episode focuses on a different year. This opening episode focuses on comedy from 1979, a year in which comedy, like the country in the year that elefect Margaret Thatcher, was becoming increasingly polarised. On the one hand were the northern club comics like Bernard Manning in The Comedians, while on the other was the rise of the alternative comics with Rowan Atkinson in Not the Nine O’clock News.
The rest of the series explores the years 1984, 1998 and 2003.
The Comedy Years is on ITV3 at 21.00.
