While this year has been the centenary of among other things the end of World War One, another event happened that year that killed even more than that conflict: the Spanish Flu pandemic.

In this deeply graphic documentary narrated by Christopher Eccleston (which you can’t help but feel is the result of someone wanting to find a doctor and getting the wrong end of the stick), we examine the conditions that lead to the spread of the disease, the efforts to stop it, and what we can learn from it to prevent future pandemics.

The Flu That Killed 50 Million is on BBC Two at 21.00.
