When it comes to pirate radio, most people will probably think of the 1960s and DJs on ships like Radio Caroline. However, pirate radio continued long after this.
Rapper Rodney P looks into the boom in pirate radio that occurred in 1980s London. It was these pirate radio stations that allowed performers like him to be heard. Pirate radio was the main way that many black musicians made their names, at a time when they got little exposure elsewhere.
Among those featured include the DJs who performed at the time, owners of the pirate stations, and staff from the Department of Trade and Industry who tried to close the stations down.
