The Martian

Ridley Scott cements his status as a master of sci-fi escapism with his 2015 venture, The Martian, starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain and Sean Bean. The premise of the film revolves around an astronaut, Mark Watney, who has to utilise his ingenuity and dig deep to find a way to survive on Mars after being left stranded on the red planet by his fellow astronauts during a violent storm. The Martian has received renown from critics and audiences alike and while it doesn’t set out to be a massive addition to the sci-fi genre – like Interstellar and Gravity for example – it far surpasses its benchmark and proves itself a modern sci-fi classic.

Presumed dead in the pandemonium of ravenous dust storm on the surface of Mars, Mark Watney (Damon) finds himself the sole inhabitant of the original team’s base-camp. Realising he is now stranded for four years until the next Mars mission, Ares IV lands and with his food and water running out, Watney must use his knowledge as a botanist, his ingenuity and his will to live to devise a way to survive in such a hostile environment. After establishing contact with NASA plans are hatched, by both the organisation and his former team, to bring Watney home.

The Martian – Saturday 9:00pm on Channel 4.
