The Moorside is a two-part drama charting the events following the real-life disappearance of nine-year-old Shannon Matthews in 2008. It was a case that gripped the nation but one that would deliver a shocking outcome.
There has been little support for the drama in the area surrounding Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and even less so on the estate from which the drama takes its title. Some say the incident should not be treated as entertainment while others are concerned that the narrative will portray the central characters and residents of the estate as simple northern caricatures.
Written by Neil McKay and starring Sian Brooke, Sheridan Smith and Gemma Whelan. The focus of this two-parter is on the spirit and determination of the women at the forefront of the campaign and the impact on them when the truth about Shannon’s disappearance was finally revealed.
It would be easy to rage at a play like this and the extraordinary events it portrays, but there’s nothing to gain in that. Take it at face value and put your preconceptions to one side for an hour at least. This drama will certainly get people talking.
