The 2011 thriller-slasher, The Purge, boasts a truly unique and intriguing premise in amongst a sea of regurgitated horror stories in modern movie industry – for one night each year, in order to vent the populace’s aggression and prevent over-population, all crime becomes legal, all emergency services are suspended and communities are forced to fend for themselves for the next twelve hours. The film stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady as James and Mary Sandin respectively as well as Edwin Hodge and Rhys Wakefield.
The year is 2022 and, after an economic collapse lead to the election of a radical new government in American, for one night only all crime is made legal and all bets between neighbours, communities and even families are off the table. The film picks up that very night with the Sandis family who are making their preparations for the annual purge which is set to begin later that night. After the family’s youngest son, Charlie, lets a wounded stranger into the house the Sandis household incurs the ire of a particularly sadistic group of “purgers” who promise to besiege the house should the wounded man not be turned back over to them. Will the family sacrifice their morality to stay alive or is such a price for survival simply too high?
The Purge – Friday 9:00pm on E4.
