While the Sun is the main thing that drives life on Earth, it could also be what might destroy our civilisation.

The Sun produces coronal mass ejections, a violent eruption from the surface of the star. The last major one to hit our planet was in September 1859, which knocked-out the telegraph system. However, because we depend on technology so much if one were to happen now it could ruin our civilisation. The Sky at Night looks at what we are doing to combat this scenario.

The Sky at Night is on BBC Four at 21.00.
