Preview – The Sound of Movie Musicals

The Broadway Melody

The musician and broadcast Neil Brand charts the history of the musical in cinema.

Starting in 1929, Brand first looks at The Broadway Melody, the second film to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture, and the first sound film to win the prize. This resulted in a boom in musicals during the 1930s, leading to pictures movies like The Wizard of Oz. Brand also looks at some odder movies, like the Soviet musical comedy Circus, and performs some classical musical tracks himself.

The Sound of Movie Musicals is on BBC Four at 21.00.
