Based on a true story, Jason Watkins stars as Phil Jones, the leading climate scientist working at the University of East Anglia with a team of top researchers. Phil Jones’ life is upturned and career called into question when they find their research has been hacked, and emails stolen.
As Phil investigates, it becomes clear that the hackers are climate change deniers, backed by large corporations that profit off fossil fuels, and they have timed the attack to align with an important summit in Denmark, and thereby disrupt any measures from being taken.
This thriller is an authentic account of the first big ‘fake-news’ story, and how it broke into the mainstream unexpectedly to present yet another obstacle. The hackers and corporate interests clip and edit the stolen research to make it look like the scientists are falsifying their data.
A public inquiry concludes that there was no wrongdoing by Jones and his team, but will public perception be swayed by the truth, or by a few punchy headlines?
