Preview – The Vietnam War

Lyndon B. Johnson
Lyndon B. Johnson awards the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant Marty A. Hammer, in Vietnam.

This engrossing documentary series continues as the next double-bill of episodes covers the period between July 1967 and June 1968.

During this time the North Vietnamese plans to launch a surprise offensive, which would eventually become the Tet Offensive. Meanwhile US President Lyndon B. Johnson attempts to reassure the public that victory was possible while dealing with an increase in anti-war sentiment, and eventually decides not to stand for re-election.

We also come across some of the atrocities committed by both sides of the conflict. Among the people covered include former presidential candidate John McCain who was POW during the war.

The Vietnam War is on BBC Four at 22.00.
