This documentary examines the role music has played politically during the 20th century.

The first episode begins with the First World War and the Russian Revolution, and ends with the rise of the Nazis. Presenter Suzy Klein smashes up a piano in the spirit of the Bolsheviks, looks into gender-bending cabarets in 1920s Berlin, the shady politics of “Mack the Knife”, and the music that both tried to mock Hitler and helped bring him to power.

Tunes for Tyrants: Music and Power with Suzy Klein is on BBC Four at 21.00.
