If there is one thing you can rely on England to do when qualification seems a formality, it is to revert to type and put in a performance so underwhelming that it allows an opponent, who had been soundly thrashed 5-nil as recently as March this year, to pull themselves back from a goal down and take all the points. And so it was on Friday night when Gareth Southgate’s team had the opportunity to seal their place in the finals with a win over Czech Republic but instead fluffed their lines and fell to defeat.
Tonight they arrive in Sofia to face Bulgaria. The same prize is on the table, are they hungry enough to take it.
It is one thing to have a settled squad it is another entirely to have one that includes players who feel assured of their place within it. Southgate could do with rattling a few cages to let them know that the squad for the finals next summer is far from cemented.
