Ben Elton recently complained about critics being too harsh on sitcoms filmed in front of studio audiences. He may well have evidence to back his point, because in January 2017 readers of the British Comedy Guide voted his sitcom Upstart Crow the best new TV sitcom of last year.

David Mitchell returns as William Shakespeare in the sitcom about the Bard’s early years. In the opening episode, Will meets an African prince named Otello (Steve Toussaint) who he tries to befriend in order to improve his social standing.

Upstart Crow is a most enjoyable show – just a shame that every newspaper TV critic will be too busy fawning over Mitchell’s new non-studio audience sitcom Back to treat it fairly.

Upstart Crow is on BBC Two at 20.30.
